What is a skill file?

A recipe card your AI reads before it works.

Without one, your AI makes up a method every time. With one, it follows steps someone already worked out. Here's a real example.

1Name and description.

They tell the agent when to use the skill.

2Numbered steps.

They're the method, in plain words.

3Checks.

They catch the usual mistakes before you see them.

# Sales email

## Steps
1. Find the one problem this reader has.
2. Subject line under 8 words.
3. Open with them, not with us.
4. Body under 120 words.
5. End with one easy question.

## Check before sending
- No "I hope this finds you well".
- One ask only.
Inside a skill file

Four parts. Each one has a job.

This is one of the 218 SkillWag Originals, cut down a little. Every skill follows roughly this shape.

## Output
Summary, decisions, actions.
A

Frontmatter

A name and a one-line description. Your agent reads only this until the task matches, so it knows when to pull the skill in.

B

Steps

The method, numbered and in plain words. This is what replaces guessing.

C

Checks

A short list the agent runs before handing work back. It catches the usual mistakes.

D

Output format

What the finished result should look like, so you get the same shape every time.

Same request, two results

Your prompt stays the same.
The method changes.

The same request, with and without a skill file. These are illustrations, and results depend on your tool and model.

A quick summary of a long report

ASK“Summarize this 30-page report for my boss.”
Prompt alonegeneric

This report discusses various important topics related to the company’s performance and strategy. It covers many areas including sales, marketing, operations and finance, and highlights both challenges and opportunities…

(six paragraphs that repeat the table of contents)

With a skillfollows steps

Bottom line: Q3 revenue rose 8%, but churn doubled in the SMB plan.

Three things to know:
1. Growth is all enterprise.
2. SMB churn is tied to the price change.
3. Support backlog is 2x target.

Decision needed: roll back the SMB price, or not?

12 jobs, done properly

Twelve everyday jobs your AI does properly once it has the skill.

Review a pull request

Correctness, security and tests, with comments marked blocking or nit.

Write a cold email

Short, personal, one ask, and an easy way out.

Clean a messy spreadsheet

Fixed formats, removed duplicates, and a log of every change.

Research with sources

Claims matched to sources, with disagreements noted.

Edit for clarity

Shorter sentences and the same meaning.

Outline a slide deck

One idea per slide and titles that say the point.

Draft a one-page plan

Problem, customer, price, risks and next 90 days.

Run a weekly review

Done, loose ends, next week's top three.

Automate a chore

Trigger, steps, error handling and a dry run first.

Check for leaked secrets

Keys and tokens in code and in git history.

Build a budget

Income, fixed costs, variable costs and the gap.

Write a postmortem

Timeline, impact, root cause and owners, with no blame.

Who this is for

People who already use an AI agent, and want better work from it.

Solo founders

Use the Planning, Sales and Marketing packs for cold emails, one-page plans, pricing notes and landing-page copy, without hiring for each job.

Freelancers

Turn client calls into action lists, write proposals with a clear scope, and send follow-ups the same day.

Developers

Use 1,251 coding skills and 783 ops skills for code reviews, test writing, refactors, CI and postmortems, all done to a checklist.

Small teams

Everyone's agent follows the same steps, so the same task comes out the same way whoever runs it.

Creators

Outline posts, tighten scripts, plan a content calendar and write descriptions that skip the filler.

Researchers and analysts

Answers with sources, data summaries with the method shown, and fact-checks before you publish.

Why this exists

Your AI isn't the problem.
It just has no instructions.

If you use an AI agent every day, you know the pattern. You ask for something simple, like an email, a summary or a review of your code. What comes back is long, polite and somehow wrong. So you explain what you meant, and then explain it again.

It isn't that the model is weak. It starts every job from nothing. It doesn't know how a good cold email is built, what a code review should check, or that a cleaned spreadsheet needs a change log. It guesses, and it guesses differently each time.

A skill file fixes that. It writes the method down once, so your agent can follow it every time.

The files already exist. They're just scattered.

Developers and teams have been publishing skill files on GitHub for months. But they sit across hundreds of repositories. Some are duplicates, some are broken, and many have no license at all, which means you aren't allowed to use them.

We went through more than 270 collections. We kept files only from collections whose licenses allow reuse and resale, and dropped the rest. We removed images, junk and empty files, sorted everything into 12 packs, and wrote a manifest so you can search it. Then a script checked every file again. We cut 1,229 broken, copied or ad-like files, and moved 1,476 that missed a check into a separate bonus library.

Then we wrote 218 of our own.

Some everyday jobs had no good open skill, like a weekly review, a budget or a phishing check. So we wrote 218 SkillWag Originals in the same format, with concrete steps, a worked example and a checklist. A script checked the format of every one, and we dry-ran 60 of them by hand on realistic examples, which caught and fixed a few mistakes.

What we won't tell you

We won't tell you this will make you rich, or that every one of 6,073 skills is perfect. Many are excellent, some are niche, and a few you'll never open. What we promise is a clean, sorted, properly credited library for $9, with a 30-day refund if it isn't for you.

Drop in a folder

Copy the skills you want into your tool's skills folder. Your agent uses them when they fit the task.

Getting started

Pick your tool.

SkillWag works with any agent that reads SKILL.md files. The steps below are general guidance, not tested instructions for each tool. Tools change often, so check your tool's own help pages if a step doesn't match.

  1. Unzip SkillWag anywhere on your computer.
  2. Copy a skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ to use it in every project, or .claude/skills/ inside one project.
  3. Start Claude Code. It reads each skill's description and loads the skill when your request matches it.
# example
cp -r SkillWag-v2-Curated-Core/SkillWag-Originals/05-Sales-Email/cold-email-sequence ~/.claude/skills/
  1. Unzip SkillWag.
  2. Copy the skill files into your project's .cursor/rules/ folder, or keep them in the project and mention them in chat with @.
  3. Ask as usual. Cursor uses the steps in the file.
  1. Unzip SkillWag.
  2. Put the skill in your agent's instructions. That can be a skills folder if the tool supports SKILL.md, a rules folder (Cline and Windsurf use rule files), a link from AGENTS.md, or the text pasted into the file.
  3. Mention the skill by name in your request the first time.
  1. Open a SKILL.md in any text editor.
  2. Paste it into ChatGPT, Gemini or any chat app, then add “Follow this skill for my next request.”
  3. Make your request. For skills you use often, save the text in custom instructions or a project.
Works with

Any agent that reads SKILL.md files, or any app you can paste text into, such as:

Names are used to describe what the files work with. We have not tested every tool, and no partnership is claimed.

Where the files come from

Open licenses. Real credits. No grey areas.

In the Curated Core, 5,855 skills come from 113 public collections under licenses that allow reuse and resale, such as MIT, Apache 2.0, BSD and CC0. Every file keeps its author's credit, and the full license texts ship in the zip.

Collections with no license, or a license that bans selling, were left out. The other 218 are SkillWag Originals we wrote ourselves. Read the licenses and credits

FAQ

Straight answers.

What exactly is a skill file?

A plain text file, usually named SKILL.md, with a short name, a description of when to use it, and the steps to follow. Your AI agent reads it before it starts a task.

Which tools does it work with?

Any AI agent that reads SKILL.md or markdown instruction files, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI. With ChatGPT or any chat app, you can paste a skill in before your request. We have not tested every tool ourselves, so check your tool's help pages for where skill files go.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. The README shows where to put the folders for each tool. For chat apps, you just copy and paste.

Where do the files come from?

In the main pack (the Curated Core), 5,855 skills come from 113 public GitHub collections whose licenses allow reuse and resale, such as MIT and Apache 2.0. The other 218 are SkillWag Originals that we wrote. Credits and license texts are included.

Can't I get these for free?

Many of them, yes, if you find, check and sort them yourself across more than 100 collections. You're paying $9 for that work, plus the 218 originals.

Is every file perfect?

No. The collected skills were checked by script, not read one by one. We removed 1,229 weak or broken files, and moved 1,476 more into a bonus Advanced Library that is not individually tested. Skim a skill before you let an agent run commands with it.

What is the Advanced Library?

A bonus folder of 1,476 extra collected skills. Each one missed at least one of our checks, for example a missing linked file, no name block, or commands that delete data. It is clearly labeled and not individually tested. It is for experienced users, and the 6,073 skills in the Curated Core are the main product.

How were the skills tested?

The 5,855 collected skills in the Curated Core passed automated script checks: a proper name and description, no missing linked files and no delete or overwrite commands. All 218 SkillWag Originals passed a format check, and 60 of them were dry-run by hand on realistic examples. Nothing was tested by outside experts.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay $9 once and keep the download.

What if it isn't for me?

Email us within 30 days of buying and we refund the full $9.

Can I use the skills for client or company work?

Yes. Keep the license and credit files with any files you share, as those licenses require.

Will this make me money?

We don't promise that, and results vary. The skills help your AI follow better steps.

Are you part of Anthropic, OpenAI or Cursor?

No. SkillWag is independent. Tool names are used only to say what the files work with.

Do I have to install all 6,073?

No, and we don't recommend it. Search MANIFEST.csv and copy in the skills that fit your work. Most people use a few dozen.

Will skills slow my agent down?

Agents like Claude Code load only a skill's short description until the skill is needed. Installing hundreds can still crowd things, so pick what you use.

Are there duplicates?

Exact duplicate files were removed during the build. Some skills still cover similar jobs from different authors. That's on purpose, so you can pick the style you like.

Do skills work with any model?

They're plain text, so any model can read them. How well each one follows the steps depends on the model and tool.

Is this a course?

No. It's a library of files. The README covers setup, but there are no videos or lessons.

How do I get help?

Email help@skillwag.com and a person will reply.
